Mostly Mass (2021)

Mostly Mass is a rippling world of bodily joy, drift, and noise in which collective movement, touch, sweat and rhythm overtake the illusions of rationality and productive logic. What if suddenly only dancing together made sense?

In the piece, humans are seen as a constantly reorganising mass, organic and full of possibilities, as social creatures. We imagine an ode to bodies, bodies that morph, transform, flock, touch, churn, flop and strain. We shape ourselves into towers and sway like hay in the wind, our surfaces touching and creating new knowledge, transmitting a new culture.

In the creation process we asked ourselves what meanings the concepts of bodily knowledge, collectivity and common striving and effort could carry for the modern-day human. What kind of joy and pleasure can movement create? What kind of world can we build by leaning into bodily empathy and touch? In order to believe in this world we must believe in our body.

Mostly Mass continues with themes that are central to Kinetic Orchestra. The dancers have worked on the piece for a long time, researching partnering, touch and acrobatic movement together.
